Since I’m bored right now, I propose a hypotheticals thread. Which dream vehicle, money no object, would you drive that is the opposite of your current DD in as many ways possible?
As an illustration, I might go with a Cord L29 roadster. Straight eight, two-door, convertible, manual, and FWD. Prewar instead of more modern, and if I wanted an option even further out, I could do it a Cord 812 (forced induction vs. NA) instead.

I mean, at this point, it’d be an actual car. Maybe even a motorcycle!
(Currently carless, even after almost six years of Oppo membership)

Hmmm, opposite to DD in as many ways as possible is hard to quantify.
I’d say a new Ford GT, but that has 4 wheels, a steering wheel and seats in common with my CX-3.
I guess I would say a Ripsaw? Not much in common with a CX-3 there

I would say opposite in as many of the readily quantifiable ways as possible while still being recognizably a car. Drivetrain, layout, age, capacity, style, manufacture country, etc. etc.
It’s more about “what would you consider a dream car that’s nothing like what you’re driving”. If your DD reflects your normal preferences, what would make you think differently on as many of them as possible, basically.

The opposite of my car would be a large, 2WD automatic with a big V8 and two doors not made in Japan or Europe.
So take your pick of huge American luxury coupes and convertibles from Packards and Duesenbegs up to a Coupe de Ville or MkIII.

Ripsaw I think lol.

Having a car *is* the opposite of currently not driving one. So... any dream car at all qualifies for the question.

Let’s see, what would the opposite of my Mustang be? Well, first and foremost, it’d have to be FWD. Automatic transmission, might as well make it a convertible too, since mine’s a coupe. Throw in something with low displacement too, say, 4 cylinders or less (maybe even go forced induction)...
I’m thinking maybe a Saab.

An automatic 911 is quite the opposite of my car

Well, THAT was an easy categorization. But, I should note, if your current AWD is RWD-based, then clearly you need to specify an Olds Toronado.

I DD a CUV so this might be as opposite as I’m, happily, willing to go.

Excellent. I’ll take a WRX STi, then.

Opposite of a Mazda3, manual is a RWD diesel automatic with solid axles.

How about a Ford Lightning?

I would say Rubicon but it’s top comes off too. So ...

That’s your budgetless dream car? I mean, it’s fine. But....

I live in Stoon. If I’m going from no car to one car, you can bet I’m going to go with something that can survive here.

Fair enough. But, still unlimited budget! At least specify some badass tuned, rally spec, street legal STi.
Dominate winter!

Most importantly, it needs to be an actual dream car, and not just something you’d... tolerate. Which makes your choices hard.
If there’s a FWD Kei convertible...

Having established that this is a practical, 4-door, longitudinal V8, RWD/4WD, pickup, powered by gasoline, of American manufacture...
The absolutes say it must be impractical, have a transverse motor and be anything but a truck, not from North America. And while 2 isn’t really the opposite of 4, it is in automotive terms. So, 2-door.
Open to interpretation—What’s the opposite of a V8? Is the opposite of a gas engine a diesel or an electric? Do I end up with FWD or AWD?
Going down the electric/AWD route, I’d have this:
Electric FWD:
I can’t think of anything I want with a diesel that’s not a truck so I’m not going to bother.

Somewhat cheating because nearly opposite of everything, but a good choice nonetheless.

Old, large but practical, good off-road but unreliable? A 2000s Range Rover it is!

Driving an automatic, NA, V8 wagon means that a manual Honda Civic sedan with a turbo is probably the polar opposite. JDM breh. For an actual dream car, a Mazdaspeed Miata checks all the boxes besides FWD.

Well, I’ve never really been one to spend much time thinking about dream cars, so I decided to focus on coming up with those opposite parameters first to see what that limits my choices to.
I forgot about kei cars. Hmm...

I dd a truck, so a motorcycle.

Some symmetry in going from greater-than-car not-car to smaller-than-car not-car, I guess.

Drivetrain opposites make it more challenging, for sure.

I did say unlimited budget, so that makes that a sound choice.

Hmm Current DD: Japanese 4wd SUV with a NA V8 and an automatic.
Opposite: 2wd, two door, convertible, and maybe supercharged? There can only be one correct answer.

Completely opposite of my small, economic red car?
Maybe a Mark V. I dig these a lot.

Classic car, RWD, not American, coupe or convertible...
Alpine A310 or Renault Caravelle. I thought it would be fun to move the engine from front to back as well.

Lately I’ve been driving the Cherokee every day. In-line six, rear wheel drive, automatic, boxy, durable, green, stands tall, and pretty practical.
So I guess this:
![]() 03/01/2018 at 18:03 |

Hmmm... opposite of a Focus wagon... so the opposite of practical, easy to service and affordable... that I would be willing to drive.
I’ll go with the 1st gen Tesla Roadster:
